End Fed Dipole Antennas
What base and portable VHF UHF HF dipole or EFHW antenna is best?
A base or portable VHF UHF HF dipole antenna is the simplest most efficient antenna available. Some people think about TV Rabbit ears when they see a dipole antenna, which is exactly what they should do! Most basically, these antennas have two identical conductive elements for transmitting or receiving on a frequency they are tuned for.
Technically, the dipole is an antenna that produces a radiation pattern approximating that of an elementary electric dipole with radiating properties energizing a line of current, which has a high voltage point at the end of each element.
How do you choose a dipole or EFHW antenna?
Choosing the best VHF UHF HF dipole of EFHW antenna is all about deciding what you will be doing with it. You will need to determine how much space you have as well as these antennas can become quite large. There are indoor and outdoor types, so decide which one you are using before you purchase. Many people use both small and large dipoles of EFHW antennas to work a ham radio, but you can also use them to get a signal for your radio or television. Choose a design suited to your space, then determine the broadcast range you need and choose a size accordingly. Depending on your bandwidth and frequency needs, you may need a certain type of dipole ranging from an EFHW, a half-wave dipole, or other type antenna.
What kinds of dipoles are there?
There are many types of these VHF UHF HF antennas. Dipoles are a versatile and sturdy type of antenna, and they have just a few accessories. Some of the types are:
Non-resonant dipole: This type keeps the actual antenna away from the resonant frequency. It has a much broader bandwidth.
Short dipole: One of the poles is shorter than half of a wavelength (the standard), causing higher impedance. This causes a shorter wavelength that is less sensitive to frequency changes.
Folded dipole: As the name states, this type of antenna has one of the halves folded back onto itself. This type of dipole antenna has a larger bandwidth than some of the others.
Multiple half waves dipole: This type of antenna contains several bars in odd numbers, causing a different radiation pattern.
Half-wave dipole: This type is also known as an “aerial.” It has two antenna pieces which are each 1/4 of a wavelength long. This a very common type of antenna, where the half-wave antenna is a resonant radiating element with a total electrical length of one half-wave.
EFHW (End-Fed Half-wave) dipole: This type of antenna is a half-wave antenna that has one resonant radiating element with an electrical length of one half-wave.
No matter which selection, a VHF UHF HF dipole or EFHW antenna will provide you with years of quality experiences.
