100W 10-40 meter HF Magnetic Loop antenna

User Manuals – Alpha Antenna

The 10-40 meter Alpha Magnetic Loop is the solution to many issues that real people face. Consider how other portable MagLoops lack the design to handle 100 watts and then try and compensate for it with devices or marketing fluff.

The Alpha Loop is the one MagLoop that is designed well enough to take the power that modern day rigs are capable of producing.

Think about it: Only Alpha Antenna takes the time to build a shielded inner faraday feed loop, which shields the inner pick-up loop from RFI (radio frequency interference).

So, stop using messy poorly designed antennas that require huge whips, taps, or tangled up wires; and start using a tuned circuit!

Included:

  • 10-40M Alpha Loop is a tuned circuit, which consists of:
    • 2 – 16 inch masts that couple together and coax mounts
    • 1 – Tuning box with Female 1/4 20 mount
    • 1 – Outer LMR400 loop
    • 1 – Inner shielded faraday loop
  • Field Bag for the Alpha MagLoop
  • Weight 2.8 lbs (45 Ounces or 1.27Kg)

Specifications:

  • Continuous coverage from 7 MHz to 29.7 MHz at 100W PEP SSB, 50W CW, or 10W digital.
  • 6 Meter, 2 Meter & 440 MHz at 100W PEP SSB when the optional add-on element is purchased & installed.
  • IP Rating: IP-53 – Protected against dust limited ingress, no harmful deposits. Protected against direct sprays of water up to 60 degrees from the vertical.
  • Environmental operating parameters: -15 to 90 (in direct sunlight) degrees Fahrenheit and winds up to 35 Mph

NOTE: The system operates independently for either 10-40M or 6/2/70cm by changing the elements.

Summary Analysis:

Components and Assembly of the Alpha Loop v2.0

How to tune the Alpha Loop.

There is a huge tuning knob that makes adjusting the loop for the lowest SWR very easy.

Attached to between the knob and capacitor is a 6:1 reduction drive, which increases ease of tuning even more.

To tune the antenna once it is deployed, just turn the knob while listening for the loudest noise floor in SSB mode, and then transmit at 5W in FM or CW mode while you tune and watch for the minimum SWR on your rigs built in meter.

How did we make a 100-watt MagLoop?

How did we accomplish 100W power levels on 10-40M? We perfected each component which enables the antenna system to handle 100 Watts PEP SSB on 10-40 Meters.

How did we enable VHF UHF on the Alpha Loop?

How did we enable support for VHF UHF? Our engineers designed resonance on 420-450MHz and 144-148MHz plus 50-54MHz with an add-on element.

OPTIONS For the Alpha Loop

A) Optional SWR Indicator

This SWR Indicator is a simple device for Magnetic Loop MagLoop antennas that makes tuning even easier.

WARNING!

Do not exceed 10 Watts Continuous Carrier (FM, Digital, AM, etc.) while tuning or the indicator lamp will fail.

Can be used on higher power loops only if the SWR Indicator is removed after tuning.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Install by attaching the Copper Clip to either of the PL259s at the loop’s tuning box.
  2. Set your rig to the desired frequency in SSB mode
  3. Tune loop till the loudest noise floor is heard from your rig’s speaker.
  4. Set rig to FM or CW mode at 5 watts.
  5. Transmit and tune for brightest illumination on the SWR Indicator’s LED.

B) Optional SWR Sounder

Place the SWR Sounder near any magnetic loop antenna and listen for the loudest beep as you tune for the lowest SWR.

C) *Optional VHF/UHF/6 Meter add-on element

Optional add-on element to enable 100W Magnetic Loop Antennas to support additional VHF & UHF plus 6 Meters, 2 Meters, and 440 MHz.

  • Gain on 6M = 1.6dBd, VHF = 4.5dBd, and UHF = 7.2dBd

  1. GREAT Product works even better than advertised! I will be purchasing the 80 meter add-on soon! 73 – Shane Jackson

  2. Worked all the bands with ease, excellent results.

  3. I purchased the Alpha Magnetic Loop Antenna along with the heavy-duty tripod a couple of months ago. It was straightforward to set up and get running with my radio. Tuning the antenna can take a little time because the tuning knob for the capacitor is very sensitive, but I’ve never had a problem achieving good tuning when using my antenna analyzer.

I’ve been very pleased with the performance of the antenna. I’ve set it up various locations indoors around my house, and I’ve been surprised at how well it performs. Using just 20 watts on FT-8 I’ve made hundreds of QSOs since getting it, including contacts to the Kiribati Dxpedition T32TT on 3 different bands, a distance of over 7100 km from my location in Texas.

I did have a problem early on with the 3D printed parts that have female 3/8 24 threads. I found them to be extremely fragile and they stripped out far too easily. However Steven, the founder of the company, met the challenge head-on and sent me new upgraded parts to take care of the problem. I’ve been very impressed with his commitment to customer service.

I can highly recommend the Alpha Magnetic Loop antenna, particularly for those users that need to have an antenna in a very small space indoors. Also Alpha is a great company that will work hard to make sure you’re happy with your purchase. You can’t go wrong with this company.

  4. Did my homework and decided to get the Alpha Loop, and I was not disappointed. The build quality is superior, and replacement parts are easily available. Packs down easily in the provided bag too, which makes it perfect for QRP ops. Works especially well with the waterfall display on the IC-705 because you can actually “see” the loudest part of the spectrum to indicate where to stop tuning.

Was so happy with its performance I bought a base vertical antenna from Alpha as well, and it also works superbly. Low SWRs across 20-40 meters (where I primarily operate) with 4 NVIS lines. Best part is they are both made in America!

  5. Great results.

Q & A

What performance difference is experienced when this antenna is placed inside versus outdoors? Q A asked on December 28, 2023

We have a special article that specifically covers the 'Performance comparison of a Magnetic Loop Antenna in a Basement, Indoors, versus Outdoors' located here: https://www.alphaantenna.com/community/hints-and-kinks/hf-magnetic-alpha-loop-magloop-antenna/performance-comparison-of-a-magnetic-loop-antenna-in-a-basement-indoors-versus-outdoors/

Should I adjust my Mic Gain in the radio? Q A asked on December 3, 2023

Due to ALC being reactive, output power may exceed the 100W limit of the Alpha Antenna Magnetic Loop if adjustment to ALC is not properly made. This is why it is critical that you prepare your radio for proper operation by adjusting your Mic Gain. Is a MagLoop directional? Q A asked on December 3, 2023

The Alpha MagLoop antenna has an approximate 8-degree directional null, which tapers then increases in signal strength as you turn the antenna through that null. Should I use an antenna tuner with a Magnetic Loop? Q A asked on December 3, 2023

You should not use an antenna tuner with a Magnetic Loop antenna, because it has a built-in manual tuner. READ MORE: https://www.alphaantenna.com/community/hints-and-kinks/hf-magnetic-alpha-loop-magloop-antenna/can-i-use-a-tuner-with-on-a-magnetic-loop-antenna-magloop/
